Caucasian Shepherd Dog / Caucasian Ovcharka

Breed Information

The Caucasian Shepherd "Ovcharka" is an ancient breed. The ancient Caucasians were telling stories not just about wolfs' skirmishes, the word "Volkodav" also states exactly what role they were given, as well as stories about the participation of this dog in warfare. They have been used as a herd keeper, but also for hunting large animals (bears, wolves, etc.). In the countries of the former Soviet Union, today, they used as working dogs in their natural enviroment, as flocks keepers or as guardians. They also trained by police, for tough missions and by private security companies for space guarding and bodyguards.

Breed Characteristics

The Caucasian Shepherd dogs are dogs above the middle and high heights, with a strong and rugged structure. They are by their nature aggressive and skeptical of strangers. These characteristics, together with their durability, warmth and ability to adapt to different climatic conditions, allow the use of the Caucasian Shepherd in almost all areas of the former Soviet Union. The main areas of proliferation of the Caucasus are Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Balcaria, Dagestan and Karmica, the areas of the North Caucasus steppe and the Astrakhan region. In the Transcaucasian region, dogs have a more bulky structure, while in steppe areas they are lighter, more macrophotal, and often with shorter coats.
