Breed Characteristics

General: The Caucasian Shepherd dogs are dogs above the middle and high heights, with a strong and rugged structure. They are by their nature aggressive and skeptical of strangers. These characteristics, together with their durability, warmth and ability to adapt to different climatic conditions, allow the use of the Caucasian Shepherd in almost all areas of the former Soviet Union. The main areas of proliferation of the Caucasus are Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Balcaria, Dagestan and Karmica, the areas of the North Caucasus steppe and the Astrakhan region. In the Transcaucasian region, dogs have a more bulky structure, while in steppe areas they are lighter, more macrophotal, and often with shorter coats.

FCI Classification: Group 2 - Pinscher and Schnauzer, Rhinoceros species, Swiss mountain and cattle dogs, and other species. Section 2 - Morphoidic species, without a job exam.

Behavior and Timber: Type of maximal nervous activity, strong - balanced - calm. Well-developed defense responses that are expressed in active form. Aggression and distrust towards strangers are typical.

Type of Structure: Strong, rough, isometric, with bulky bone structure and strong muscular system. The skin is thick but elastic.

Body Structure Index: The correspondence of the perimeter of the ankle to the height of the thoracic vertebrae is 21-22 for males and 20-22 for females.

Index of Format: The correspondence of the length of the body to the height at the point of the thoracic vertebrae is 100-108 for males and females.

Type of Gender: Well expressed. Males are louder and more bulky. The females are slightly lower in height, with a slightly lighter structure.

Dimensions: The height at the point of thoracic vertebrae is for males not less than 65 cm, while for females not less than 62 cm.

Hair: The hair is straight, rough, with a strongly developed undercoat, with a lighter color. On the head and on the front of the limbs the hair is shorter and stuck.

Colour: Gray in various shades, usually open to red (reddish red), like straw, white, red-brown, tabby, also with colorful hair and scattered spots.

Head: Massive head with wide skull and highly developed apples. Flat front, flat, divided into two equal parts by a small groove. The stop is not well expressed.

Face: The eyes are dark, small, oval shaped, deeply placed. The ears are hanging, placed high, close off. The nose is large, broad and black. White and light dogs are brown (brown), and the colored nose is acceptable. The muzzle is less than the length of the skull, a bit sharp. Fleshy lips, but dry and well-attached. The teeth are white, strong, well-developed, close to each other and without visible gaps. The incisors are flat on the base with scissor bite.

Neck: Powerful, short. It sits low enough to form an angle of 30-40 degrees with respect to the back line.

Body: The thoracic vertebrae are broad, muscular and well expressed above the back line. The back is wide, straight and muscular. The lumbar vertebrae are short, wide and slightly oval. The pelvic zone is broad, muscular and almost horizontal. The chest is wide, deep, with a slightly rounded shape. The bottom line of the chest is at the level of the elbows or lower. The abdomen is moderately raised.

Tail: Highly positioned, low down, reaching up to the tarsal bone. Shaped, hooked or curled. Cutting the tail is allowed.

Feet: Large, oval shaped, strong, compact and tight.

Front View: Appearance: Looking straight ahead and parallel. The shoulder-to-arm corner is about 100 degrees. Lower shoulders: Straight, strong, without being long. Metacarpals: Short, strong, placed vertically or with a minimum slope. The length of the forelimbs to the elbows is slightly larger than half the height of thoracic vertebrae. Long leg index, the height of the forelimbs, from the elbow to the ground to the thorax vertebrae is 50-54.

Rear View: Appearance: Looking from behind straight and parallel to the profile and slightly open corners to the patella. Lower thighs: Short. Knees: Strong, wide, with slightly open corners. Metatarsal Bones: Bulky, placed vertically. The rear ends are not tilted backwards. The vertical line starting from the rear should pass from the center of the tarsal bone and the metatarsal.

Walking and Moving: Free, lively walking. Usually harmonious. The characteristic movement is a short twist, which in case of acceleration usually passes into light heavy galloping. When moving edges should be moving in a straight line, the front ends should slightly approach the median line. The joints of the front and back edges function freely. The back and the lumbar vertebrae are elastic. The thoracic vertebrae and pelvic bandage should be on one level.
